SAIL-ELA (and the winner is...)

Image
Students recently wrote and submitted two-sentence horror stories for our schoolwide contest. Students in grades 6-8 voted for their favorite stories! This was a huge hit and something we'll definitely do again next year! The overall winner was Natalie Kenny in 6th grade! She won the basket of goodies along with a creepy plaque. Here is her story:  “Dad! Come kill the bug in my room!” I shouted, hoping the man looking through my window wouldn’t think I was home alone.  The 7th-grade winner was Dexter Vance:  I was playing hide and seek with my sister in my church's cemetery. I am still digging and haven’t yet found her. The 8th-grade winner was Elsie Moreno:  My parents always asked me, ‘if your friends jumped off a cliff, would you?’ Now, I stare at their crumpled bodies as the wind seems to whisper, ‘your turn.’

This week students started creating their own two-sentence horror stories! Our hopes are to share them with the school and have staff and students vote for their favorites...or the story that sends chills down their spines! 👻

The problem synopses:  Ancient Greek Poet Homer created The Iliad, which tells the story of Achilles and the Trojan War. Now, OM teams will put their spin on the popular concept of the "Trojan Horse" by creating one of their own. It will be used to get past a wall in a performance that also includes a character from The Iliad, an original Greek Chorus, and an unusual statue.   Odyssey of the Mind (OM™) teaches students how to develop and use their natural creativity to become problem-solvers. Imagine being faced with a problem that requires an original solution. It can be frightening. Now imagine not being afraid to solve that problem – that is what OM members learn. This s...
